Cashmere and merino care: washing and storage

Smiling woman and man in fine-knit tops beside a neatly folded stack of knitwear.

Washing cashmere or caring for merino wool starts with the label, not the washing machine. Fibre, knit structure, colour, finish and any lining together determine what a garment can withstand. Two equally soft jumpers do not necessarily need the same treatment. A sensible routine keeps favourite pieces comfortable and easy to wear without making care unnecessarily complicated.

This guide helps you choose between airing, hand washing, permitted machine washing and professional cleaning. It also covers pilling, handling wet knitwear and storage. The sewn-in care label and the manufacturer's advice always take precedence over general tips. If a special garment leaves you uncertain, confirm the correct treatment before trying it.

Cashmere and merino: related, but different

Cashmere comes from the soft undercoat of cashmere goats. Merino wool comes from merino sheep. Both can be used in fine knitwear, but they are different fibres. Yarn weight, processing and blends also vary within each material. A lightweight cashmere jumper, a substantial merino cardigan and a knit blended with silk or cotton need not share identical instructions.

Check composition before choosing care products. A brand name containing “Cashmere” does not prove that every item is pure cashmere. Read the individual product information. When choosing women's knitwear or men's knitwear, consider material and care alongside colour and fit. This helps you choose clothing that suits your everyday habits.

Make the label your first decision

Read the washing, drying, ironing and professional-cleaning instructions. “Do not wash” does not make a basin of water a safe alternative. “Hand wash” does not automatically authorise every machine's hand-wash cycle. If machine washing is explicitly allowed, follow the specified programme, maximum temperature and additional instructions. A temperature is an upper limit, not a target you must always reach.

Leather trims, embroidery, decorative buttons, contrasting colours or a delicate lining may restrict treatment. If the label is missing or illegible, seek advice with the composition and a photograph of the complete garment. Do not try a random method simply because it worked for another jumper.

Between wears: allow time to rest

A jumper does not necessarily need washing after every wear. Check for actual dirt or a stain. Let worn knitwear air in a suitable place, away from strong heat and prolonged direct sunlight. Avoid leaving it on a narrow hanger for days: its weight may strain the shoulders and shape. Give a favourite jumper an occasional rest instead of wearing it continuously.

Consider friction too. A heavy shoulder bag repeatedly rubbing one spot, rough upholstery and sharp jewellery can affect the surface. Take care when putting on or removing a necklace or watch. These small habits are better than pulling at pills later. A base layer may be comfortable but does not replace cleaning when clothing is genuinely dirty.

Wash cashmere and merino without guessing

If hand washing is permitted, use a clean basin, water at the label's specified temperature and detergent suitable for the material. Follow the detergent dosage. Move the garment gently without scrubbing, wringing or stretching it. Rinse carefully and support the whole wet knit when lifting it. There is no universal soaking time: follow any product-specific instructions and avoid leaving it immersed unnecessarily.

If machine washing is allowed, use the specified wool treatment, paying attention to load and spin instructions. A short general cycle is not the same as a suitable wool cycle. Keep delicate knitwear away from rough zips and heavy textiles. Turn it inside out if the manufacturer advises this. Do not use ordinary stain removers, bleach or homemade mixtures without establishing that they are suitable for the item.

Professional cleaning is appropriate when the label requires it or construction and staining need specialist assessment. Tell the cleaner what was spilled and what you have already tried. Professional treatment cannot guarantee removal of every stain or reversal of earlier shrinkage. Clear information makes it easier to assess the options.

Drying and retaining shape

Follow the garment's drying instructions. Many fine knitted jumpers benefit from supported flat drying, gently arranged in their normal shape without pulling sleeves or ribs. Use a clean surface and avoid trapping moisture. Do not put a wet jumper on a radiator or hang it by the shoulders while dripping. Use a tumble dryer only when the label explicitly permits it.

Before tackling a crease, check whether ironing or steaming is allowed. A steamer is not safe for every material or finish. Avoid pressure that could distort the knit. Wear or store the jumper only when completely dry: rushing the final stage can undermine careful washing.

Handle pills carefully

Pilling consists of small fibre balls on the surface, often in areas exposed to rubbing. Its presence alone does not tell you everything about garment quality. First distinguish pills from a snagged thread. Never pull at balls or loops. Use only a method the manufacturer recommends for that knit, on a flat surface, and test gently in an inconspicuous area.

An electric fabric shaver or cashmere comb can damage threads if used incorrectly. Thin knits need particular caution. If unsure, ask for a demonstration suitable for your jumper. A hole or loose seam is different from pilling: have a possible repair assessed before the damage spreads. Not every knit repair can be invisible.

Storage and a practical wardrobe routine

Store jumpers clean, completely dry and preferably folded. Give them space rather than compressing them tightly. Check wardrobes and storage boxes regularly for dirt and insect activity. Scented sachets alone are not proof of complete protection. If you discover holes or insects, inspect the surroundings and seek targeted advice; moving the garment alone does not address the cause.

Keep care information with your purchase details so you do not have to rediscover it each season. Ask about the specific model when buying a new jumper. Clothing that suits both your style and care routine is easier to enjoy. Materials can differ within collections from Hemisphere, Panicale Cashmere and Anneclaire; always read individual product information.

Questions about cashmere and merino care

Can all cashmere be hand washed?

No. The complete garment's label decides. Construction, colour or finish can make even hand washing unsuitable.

Is every merino jumper machine washable?

No. Some are designed for it, others are not. The fibre name alone is insufficient for choosing a cycle.

Can I definitely stretch a shrunken jumper back?

No. Avoid promises involving conditioner or other household remedies. Have the damage assessed and do not pull hard on wet fibres.

Where can I ask about my purchase?

Contact Artson Fashion with the item and label to hand. We can help you review the product information so you can decide what is needed without taking an unnecessary risk with a favourite piece.
